Earlier today we reported on the rumor that the next generation Microsoft console would need to be continuously connected to the internet to function. Those rumors have caused GameStop stocks to fall more than 6% since trading opened. It does make sense, as the reason for the always on connection is to essentially ban used game sales; which is where GameStop makes the majority of their money.
But still these are just rumors and at present time the GameStop stocks have fallen 6.75 percent down to $25 a share. A few weeks back there were similar rumors from a Sony patent that indicated they may also be looking to ban used games. But neither of these reports at this time have been confirmed so both next generation consoles could still allow used games to be played.
I find it hard to believe that neither of these companies have considered the huge backlash that would come from not being able to play used games on these next gen consoles. If one console allows used games and the other one doesn’t, we would have a very quick winner to the next generation console wars.
