With most of the Grand Theft Auto attention focused right now on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 5, some interesting GTA tidbits have escaped even the most dedicated fan of the series: in an interview with a French Magazine, Rockstar boss Dan Houser has talked about the series’ future, making some really interesting statements. The interview was translated by the Official Xbox Magazine.

The question was pretty direct: Dan Houser was asked if there’s any possibility of a futuristic setting for future GTA games. Rockstar’s head answered by saying that if the team has something to say in that particular setting, all doors will be open: one thing Rockstar always has in mind in the consistency of the world so if they come up with something that doesn’t go against the GTA series continuity, they’ll do it.

Let’s not forget that Rockstar has used different time periods for its games: Red Dead Redemption had a western setting and it was an excellent game. Dan Houser said that the western setting was chosen because they had something to say for that particular setting: they wouldn’t do the futuristic setting just for the sake of flying cars but only to talk about something like the human condition in the future.

Given how GTA 5 will change the series’ formula quite a lot it’s not impossible for a future title to change the setting as well and Houser’s words actually confirm how the team is pretty much open to the idea.
