Funcom the makers of the Secret World MMO have not seen the success they were expecting when the MMO initially launched. The game has essentially gone free to play and has picked up more players, but unfortunately that hasn’t been enough to stop the layoffs. After announcing layoffs to their Raleigh, North Carolina studio, Funcom announced they are shutting down their Beijing studio this year.
This is all part of a restructuring plan that Funcom talked about last year after the Secret World failed to live up to expectations. Funcom said what they want to do is turn the Raleigh, North Carolina studio into a centralized team that will focus on supporting Funcom’s already exiting MMOs.
The Beijing studio was mostly responsible for art and animation on their MMO projects. These duties will now be given to the Raleigh, North Carolina studio, who will be given the tools to complete the animation work.
We want to send our best wishes out to anyone who is being affected by this restructuring movement.
