Now that the dust has settled, we can analyze some of the strange moves that took place in regards to the former THQ franchises. In particular, the fact that it seems out of nowhere Koch Media the owners of Deep Silver (developed Dead Island) bought the rights to Volition, The Saints Row franchise, and Metro.
Now as strange as this deal seems to be, that isn’t the weird part of the story. According to the Koch Media/Deep Silver press release, not only will Deep Silver take over publishing the next Metro and Saints Row games, they will also be developing the games as well. Here is the exact quote from the press release:
“Deep Silver, Koch Media’s international publishing powerhouse, will lead all further development and marketing on the Saints Row and Metro franchises…”
What this means is, that Deep Silver will develop the next Saints Row game and not Volition, the people who are currently working on the franchise. Volition is basically the people who created the franchise to begin with, and now Deep Silver is taking over the franchise from them. This is a little disconcerting to say the least, anyone who has played Dead Island has some issues to say the least.
No offense to Deep Silver, but they have not created anything on the same level as Saints Row: The Third and now they are being tasked with following up one of the best open world games out there. Volition knows what they are doing with the franchise; it is their creation after all, so it makes little sense to take it away from them.
But unless I am reading that statement wrong or Koch Media had a different meaning behind it, the next Saints Row game which we already know is in development through Volition games will be finished by Deep Silver. Now maybe Koch Media plans to combine Deep Silver with Volition into one large development team. But if that isn’t the case, then the Metro series and Saints Row series have just moved into the development hands of Deep Silver.
What do you think; do you trust Deep Silver to develop the next Metro and Saints Row games?
