Quantic Dream, the game development studio responsible for 2010′s Heavy Rain and currently working on Beyond: Two Souls for release later this year, could already be working on a new game for the successor to the Playstation 3. According to Kotaku columnist Superannuation, who frequently writes about secrets and speculations in the gaming industry, Quantic Dream had registered a domain back in November titled, singularityps4.com which offers a lot of possible hints as to what Quantic Dream might be working on for the future.
As noted by Superannuation, one interesting aspect of this domain is the way it is formatted just like Quantic Dream’s current domains with their games, heavyrainps3.com and beyondps3.com. This fact strongly hints that the domain is for a future game release and with the mention of ‘ps4′ in the domain name, it seems that the next-gen system to come from Sony will be called the Playstation 4, following the naming format it has used for past systems. No big surprise there.
Superannuation also delves into what the title ‘Singularity’ could mean, in terms of a new game. You may remember Quantic Dream’s impressive tech demo “Kara” from last year’s GDC, which showed an android named Kara being built and evaluated for the public, but then being disassembled when the man evaluating her notices Kara acting strangely, in which she ends up begging for her life, to which the man complies. Apparently, David Cage, the founder and head of Quantic Dream, stated in this video that an influence for the creation of the tech demo was Ray Kurzweil’s book, The Singularity is Near. In the book, Kurzweil talks about what the future could hold for us, one possibility being that we’ll be able to augment our bodies and minds with technology. The relation between the title ‘Singularity’ and Kurzweil’s book lead to speculations that Quantic Dream could indeed be expanding on the idea of the “Kara” tech demo and fleshing it out to a full game.
I know that when Quantic Dream showed the “Kara” tech demo to the public, there were many people who wanted to see it realized into a future game and they’d be ecstatic to hear about the possibility of this coming to fruition. This is all speculation of course, and until we receive confirmation on what this domain means, speculation is all we can do.
So what do you think this domain could mean from Quantic Dream? Would you want a game expanding on “Kara” or would you rather want something completely new?
