It was announced today that after a four year hiatus, FIFA Street will officially be hitting our PlayStation 3’s and Xbox 360’s for the first time on the 28th February – and will then fully retail on March 15th.
As a massive fan of the FIFA series, at first I was intrigued. I’d never played any of the FIFA Street predecessors as I’d always felt that the bizarre, arcade-like style was just a poor-man’s version of real, visceral FIFA football. After intense research and extensive watches of the tasty multitude of clips available for you all to digest on Youtube, I can confirm that the new creative director Gary Paterson seems to have done a wonderful job bringing FIFA Street back into mainstream gaming society. How good a job he has actually done will be revealed on the 28th February.
Whilst it seems a little steep for football fans to fork out for two titles that are running the same engine, Paterson has made sure that – if anything – players will be getting more modes, more variety and more longevity than they would with the wonderful yet formulaic (by comparison) FIFA 12. Arcade by objective, but not by detail – FIFA Street uses your favourite physics engine, players and incredible multiplayer to introduce players to the freakishly entertaining sub-genre of suburban football. With modes like Last Man Standing (the football equivalent of “team deathmatch”, if you can imagine such a thing) and Futsal (the popular 5 aside variation) – it’s easy to note that if you love FIFA 12, you’re probably going to love this game.
I can imagine that regardless of whether you’re into FIFA just to be wowed by seeing someone rainbow flick a ball over someone’s head, or if you’re exactly the type of person who wants to be known as “the guy who will rainbow flick a ball over your head” – there’s something for everyone in FIFA Street, hardcore or mainstream.
How successfully the game performs though, is down to you and your downloading ways. Make sure to check your respective marketplaces on the 28th February in order to pick up and play your FIFA Street demo.
