The new Playstation console still hasn’t been officially revealed and there’s already so much talk about the console, showing how much anticipation there is for the next generation. Everything is still a mystery about the console, from the final design to its specifications: rumors have that both the next Playstation and the new Xbox consoles will be powered by AMD processor, but today’s rumors actually state something new.
The Playstation 3 console is powered up by the CELL processor, produced by IBM: the company actually stated back in 2009 that they have abandoned the project for new CELL processors. But right now, the IBM site still talks about the processor, which has been used for other projects by Toshiba and other companies.
The company is supposedly at work on a new version of the chip, called PowerXCell 8i, which was the latest version of the CELL before the company announced that they would abandon the project.
Since the PowerXCell 8i was revealed for the first time a few years ago, an eventual new reveal would be showing another, more powerful processor. With the next gen right behind the corner, does this mean that the new Playstation console will be powered once again by a CELL processor? Some developers would be pleased by such a choice: Naughty Dog have expressed some concerns regarding having to work with a completely different processor.
