Apparently violent video games are still being blamed for the tragedy at Sandy Hook as Vice President Joe Biden will be meeting with representatives from the gaming industry as well as the National Rifle Association (NRA), other entertainment industries, and victims of gun violence. Shortly after the tragedy in Newtown, Biden was put in charge of a task force to determine ways to deter these types of tragedies in the future.
Biden is suppose to announce policy recommendations later this month and that is why he is meeting with all these different groups. It is not known exactly who will be representing the gaming industry at these meetings; which is a little scary considering how important these meetings probably are.
The problem is, the video game industry is not organized like the NRA or other major groups; we don’t really have one strong voice that is outspoken in the defense of video games. So in these instances when we really need a voice to stand up for us at a meeting with Vice President Biden, we have no major leadership.
As weird as this sounds, I would almost advocate sending someone like Adam Sessler or Jim Sterling (you should really watch his latest video it focuses on real violence and video game violence and speaks to this very issue) to advocate on behalf of the gamer. They understand gaming and gamers better than just a lawyer and members of the ESRB and would stand up for us. But I guess we will have to wait and see who will be representing the industry we all love; I just hope it is somebody who knows what they are doing.
