Even without knowing precise numbers, it’s a widely accepted fact that the Apple business model for selling games and apps it’s a smashing success, with many console games getting iOS ports and dedicated versions. Some reports have finally given us some precise details and the App store doesn’t show any slowdown sign, with download numbers on the rise.

Reports state that the App store has counted more than 40 billion downloads since the store has launched: of these more than half, over 20 billion, have been done during 2012. December was the best month for the Apple App Store, with over 2 billion downloads: among the most successful titles are Temple Run, with over 75 million downloads in 2013 and DragonVale earning more than 100.000.000 dollars this year. Equally successful was Clash Of Clans.

Eddy Cue, Apple Vice President, has commented the smashing success of the App Store by saying that the company will keep investing on the Store so to provide developers the best platform to develop and sell their titles.

With no sign of slowdowns and purchases and downloads going strong, who know how far Apple will go: coupled with the constant development of new devices powered by iOS, they’ll probably pose an even bigger threat to Nintendo and Sony’s handheld consoles.
