Square-Enix might not be winning any medals for originality when it comes to some of their newer RPGs, but they have found some creative ways to take advantage of some of the trends in gaming to help keep their RPGs alive and revered. It started with ports of popular titles to handheld consoles like the Nintendo GBA, DS and 3DS as well as the PlayStation counterparts, and then it has moved on to mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPad and Android devices, where they have been on a tear releasing classic titles. Now it looks like they are venturing into some more relatively-untouched turf for them as they enter the world of browser-based games.

They announced that in 2013 gamers in Japan will have access to a browser-based game called Square-Enix: Legend World and do battle with beasts and baddies from past Square-Enix RPGs. This means that your Square-Enix avatar will be doing battle with enemies from Final Fantasy games, which is pretty cool. Of course, it enters into beta early this year in Japan and still no idea of any plans for Western markets yet.
