A small town in Connecticut is going to hold a buyback drive for violent video games in response to the Newtown tragedy. After collecting the violent games, they will destroy them by burning them. Southington, Connecticut will be holding the event on January 12, and will be giving out $25 vouchers to purchase other forms of entertainment such as compensation.
The demonstration is being set up by SouthingtonSOS who is a collection of people who represent other groups such as the YNCA, fire department, board of education, and town officials. The group says they are not making a statement that violent video games caused the Newtown massacre. This demonstration is being held supposedly to make people aware that children are consumed with violent video games and that has caused a lot of problems throughout the country according to SouthingtonSOS.
I just find it funny that again video games are being blamed, but no one wants to look at the irresponsible parent who buys their ten year old an “M” rated game. Not to mention that SouthingtonSOS speaks of parents talking to their children about understanding the violence in these games but then turn around a create another violent act by destroying the video games and burning them, the sweet irony.
I had hoped we as a society had moved past the book burning stages of our development but I guess not.
