Disney Infinity is the new name for the previously announced game Toy Box. As we reported in October, the game combines Disney and Pixar characters for the first time, and aims to expand to mobile devices and online gaming.

Polygon received an invitation to the upcoming Disney Infinity event on January 15, when we can likely expect an official announcement. John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios will be in attendance, as will Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants.

Most interestingly, Polygon reports that the game is a “”theme-park-running, movie-making, game developer’s take on Skylanders”. A collectible toy range will launch alongside the game, embedded with NFC/RFID chips that allow interaction with the console versions of the game.

As well as console and mobile, a PC version is also rumoured. Disney are aiming to release Infinity across the entire range of gaming devices, with an emphasis on cross-compatibility.

With video games, Disney characters and toys combined, somehow I can’t see this failing in any way with the younger audience.
