One of the most interesting things we have learned this generation is that subscription based MMOs may not survive much longer. When a major game like Star Wars: The Old Republic can’t survive without going free to play, we may be seeing the last of subscription based MMOs. Funcom the makers of the Secret World found this out the hard way, and are now having to remove subscription fees in hopes of raising the games users.
You will still have to buy the title initially, but then can chose from three different subscription models. You can pick free which will give you access to all dungeons, missions, and weapons up to issue 4. Issue five will be released in January but is free if you create an account by the end of December.
The second subscription model is paying $15 a month which will earn you an item that gives double XP for an hour but has a cool down of 16 hours. Finally you can also sign up for the grand master lifetime membership which will give you a 10% discount at the item story and will get free monthly bonus points that can be used to purchase DLC.
From all reports The Secret World was a very unique if flawed MMO, and I hope this move is able to help the game stay afloat.
