As the case with most big games that are released now a day’s Crystal Dynamics has plans to turn the new Tomb Raider game into a original series. Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider game scheduled to be released next March will be the beginning of an original series of Tomb Raider games based on the younger Lara Croft. Creative director Noah Hughes had this to say about the direction of the Tomb Raider franchise,
“We envision carrying forward from here, rather than this being a brief detour into her origins, We want to start this adventure here and carry it on… that’s not to say we wouldn’t skip a year here or there, but we started this with the idea of continuity and building upon [it].”
“I look at this as an origin series rather than an origin story. By the end of [this first game] we will have a competent adventurer, but I still want there to be anticipation about Lara becoming the full-on Tomb Raider, and through all of that hopefully retaining some of the complexity and humanity that we’ve established here.”
Even though Hughes wouldn’t come directly out and state it, we will probably be looking forward to a few more Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider games in the future. Although, a lot of it could be predicated on how well the this upcoming Tomb Raider game sells; if the game fails to be a hit then there is a chance we might not see another Tomb Raider from Crystal Dynamics. However, with the hype surrounding this reboot, I just can’t see the game not selling well.
The previews and trailers have all been praised the game as being brilliant; the game is often being compared favorably to the Uncharted series. So it would make sense that a game that is trying to follow some of the recent success of the Uncharted series Crystal Dynamics would plan a few games ahead. What do you think, will this Tomb Raider reboot make for a good starting point for a new franchise or do you still have concerns that game may not live up to all the hype?
