It seems like every other month we are reporting on a Kickstarter game that has broken a new funding record. Star Citizen is the new record holder, raising over 6 million dollars through Kickstarter and their own website Space Industries. Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts said when announcing this project “a significant group of people that has always loved space games, and if given a quality one again will be happy to play it.”
Then Roberts showed off the preview trailer for the game and people went crazy; $6.3 million dollars of crowd funding later and Star Citizen will be fully realized. Just goes to show you that all the people running the gaming industry may not have the best idea of what types of games people really want.
Not only has Roberts raised the money through crowd funding, investors were so impressed with the product, the Wing Commander creator has already secured $1 million dollars from investors. And because the game raised so much money through crowd funding more investor money is heading towards the game; all told the game’s budget will be around $10 million dollars.
After everything was finished Roberts had this to say about the fundraising efforts:
“I am absolutely elated by the incredible outpouring of support for this project,” stated Roberts. “It’s clear that space sim fans have just been waiting for a game like ours to come along and rekindle some of the excitement that’s been missing from PC games and the space sim genre. With the resources that our fans have provided, it means the team will be able to provide more features in Star Citizen and deliver an even better game.”
As of right now the game is scheduled to be alpha play tested next winter, so there is still a lot of work to be done on the game. After watching the trailer for this game I may have to go out and buy an updated computer in the next year just to be able to play Star Citizen.
For those of you who have not seen it, here is the official trailer for Star Citizen:
