4 Ways the Wii U Attracts a Hardcore Audience

2 min

The Wii U has plenty of redeeming traits  that help it compete with other consoles, present and future, and draw in a new crowd that usually foregoes Nintendo games and consoles. Yes, I’m talking about hardcore gamers. Here are 4 ways the Wii U will attract a hardcore audience this holiday season.

4) Controller

Nintendo has always innovated with their controllers, and this one is no exception. Before you yell about how it copied the XBOX 360’s design, keep in mind that it’s only a sleeker version of their Gamecube controller, except with rearranged buttons. The buttons in particular are unique because it inverts what other controllers do—it switches the location of the analogue stick and the right buttons. Since those will be the ones gamers use the most, hopefully this turns out to be an advantage.

3) Competes with Other Consoles

The Wii U’s specs are amazing, for what it does, and compared to current-gen consoles. It can compete with both the PS3 and XBOX360, and has additional gimmick controllers that have already seen support from developers (unlike the unlucky Kinect and PS Move). Although its specs may not outclass future consoles, the launch window for those competitors is still a mystery, and in the meantime it’s a huge competitor for the other consoles. Nintendo was right to release their console earlier than the others, and at least they recognized when their old console’s lifetime had run its course.

2) Amazing Launch Lineup

The Wii U’s launch line up stunned everybody when the first console launch titles were revealed. Instead of focusing on Mario and Zelda, we received awe-inspiring trailers and tech demos for ZombiU, Assassin’s Creed 3, Ghost Recon, Darksiders 2, Batman: Arkham City, Ninja Gaiden 3, and many more titles. With the promise of similar games in the works for the console, most hardcore gamers will have something they’re interested in at the launch of the Wii U. Although many of the games are ports with new features built in to account for the Wii U’s gamepad, gamers who have always purchased Nintendo products and avoided the other, pricier consoles will finally find these series in their reach.

1) Developer Support

Tying in with the point above, the Wii U boasts some of the best developer support of any console. It already has dozens of developers who intend to back the console through its lifetime and the promise of several high-profile games. Ubisoft, Bethesda, Rockstar, Tecmo, Rocksteady, and Codemasters are just a few of the companies showing interest or full-blown support of the console. Along with that, Nintendo has talked to at least a few indie developers to attempt to get brand new IPs and experiences on their console before it’s even released. This developer support is a sure sign that the Wii U will have a long, prosperous lifetime. Even if it will be outclassed by newer consoles in two or three years, the support it has gained from developers make it a desirable addition to any hardcore gamer’s living room.
