Borderlands 2 was one of the best reviewed games of the year, but not only that fans loved the game as well. If you need proof, Borderlands 2 has already shipped 5 million copies in just over a month. During a 2K’s earnings report it was announced that Borderlands 2 has shipped 5 million copies since the game launched in September.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had this to say about the earnings report:

“Take-Two’s second quarter revenue and earnings exceeded our outlook, driven by the breakout success of 2K’s Borderlands 2 and robust demand for our catalog and digitally delivered offerings,”

One of the other reasons for Borderlands 2 success is the “strong digital sales” of the DLC content. In addition, Take-Two also talked about digital sales for other games being much improved over last year as well. Take-Two said that “revenue from digitally delivered content surged 108 percent year-over-year, driven by offerings from the Borderlands, Grand Theft Auto, and Civilization franchises, as well as Max Payne 3.”

Overall Take-Two has seen a major turnaround from last year when they net losses of $39.4 million. This year thanks to Borderlands 2 and “catalog sales” of Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption, Take-Two posted net revenue of $273.1 million which is up 155% over last year.

Take-Two also confirmed once again during the earnings report that Grand Theft Auto V will be released sometime next spring. Most likely in May which is when Take-Two have been releasing all of their games lately. Not to mention they probably want to release GTA V as far away from BioShock Infinite as they can.

Also a quick disclaimer, when a publisher says they have shipped 5 million copies that doesn’t mean they have sold 5 million copies. It just means they have sent 5 million retail copies to stores for distribution. So we don’t officially know how many copies of Borderlands 2 have been sold because Take-Two didn’t disclose this information. All we know for certain is that they have shipped 5 million copies to retail stores, which is still a very good number considering it has only been a little over a month and a half since the Borderlands 2 launched.
