With that iconic design and heroic traits, who wouldn’t want Link endorsing their products? Not German baking company Pickerd Dekor, who featured a suspiciously familiar young warrior on one of their products.
On a coloured icing packet named “Ritter-schrift”, a knight-like young boy is displayed striking a shocking resemblance to The Legend of Zelda protagonist Link - specifically Nintendo’s official artwork for The Wind Waker. It was found by user Michael Heide over on Zelda Dungeon.
The inspiration is clear to see, from the eyes and hair to the stubby sword that Link gains at the start of his adventure. The pose is almost identical with the sword and shield held the same way and knee thrust forward in mid-step. Though the cap is gone and the green garments are re-coloured, it’s clear to see the tunic design is still intact and even has Link’s belt.
While I’m all against stealing, I actually think this is pretty awesome. If the stuff was sold here I’d buy it in a flash just to keep the packaging, and perhaps use the icing to make myself some Hyrulian cakes. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and its cool knowing that there may be a Zelda fan working at Pickerd.
Others may see the situation differently, but really this does nothing to hurt the game industry in any way, unlike the blatant iOS rip-off last year. Link’s a great choice for inspiration.
Not to mention, Wind Waker Link is the BEST Link – undeniable fact.
