It would seem that Sony new exactly what they were doing all along. While the rest of the world rocked back and sat in stunned amazement at the seemingly foolish business plan of launching another iteration of the Playstation 3 so close to the estimated release of the Playstation 4, (or The Orbis).
But Sony knew exactly what they were doing, and they played it well. In the week since the launch of the new Super Slim Plyastation 3 with it’s huge 500gb memory, Sony observed a clear jump in sales. A jump of a staggering 138% increase in sales in that week alone.
The 12gb flash memory Super Slim Playstation 3 was launched a mere 4 days ago here in the UK, but as yet we have not seen any numbers regarding the sales of the unit, although we expect Sony to comment on the matter sooner rather than later.
“It is fantastic that we passed the 5 million mark. But most importantly to me is not the milestone itself, but the fact that there is momentum behind it. And with the new chassis, and the way the market is panning out this year, PlayStation definitely has the momentum.”
“These guys know that they have a lot to do to make sure the Christmas plans are sharp and focused, and they have come to them relatively late” said Gara, “So they are working at a hell of a pace. I can already feel a positive buzz that wasn’t there only a few weeks ago.”
With this clear and measurable leap in sales, perhaps Sony is on the road to regaining some of its losses.
