The sold-out Mew York Comic Con continued Friday with the first day open to the general public, following the special early access on Thursday for comic book industry personnel. Now that the stuffy academic discussions on how to run a comic book store are through, the con began the more whimsical events, like costume contests, the Maid café, and even live quiddich tournaments. Explosion.com was on the scene to report on all this, plus the occasional comic book sighting.
Another day at Comic Con, and another oddball booth was discovered. Yesterday we were surprised to find a nail salon at the con, and today we discovered a booth dedicated to nerdy wine.
While many comics fans like to sip a fine wine while perusing the monthly exploits of Hit Girl, the Abduction Wine booth still seemed a little out of place, especially with a pair of space hooker booth babes who were visibly uncomfortable with the situation. But the product does use a sci-fi alien abduction premise, and presumably people who read comics would be especially interested in drinking their wine from a bottle with a picture of a spaceship on the label…Or at least that’s what some drunken marketing guy must have thought.
Cosplay has been a tradition at comic book conventions since before the word “Cosplay” was invented, and on Friday the NYCC was mobbed by costumed adventurers. Marvel Comics had a stage event that showed off the cosplayers dressed as Marvel characters (With one sneaky Pokemon cosplayer who managed to get onstage). The con also has official costume contests Friday through Sunday, and the Friday Con was flooded by a team of Skyrim Dovakiin. Dovakiins? Dragons Born?
In addition to comic book and video game cosplayers, there was also a life-sized Velociraptor cosplayer rampaging through the show floor, terrifying the innocent with this very realistic dinosaur outfit, complete with articulated mouth.
Gamers could get their hands on recent releases like Sleeping Dogs at the Square Enix booth, or try out Resident Evil 6 at Capcom’s hub. While those are both fun (Underrated) titles, they’re already on the market, but a surprise showing at the Con was the just-announced Darkstalkers Resurrection.
The Darkstalkers characters are a staple in the Marvel Versus Capcom games, however it’s been a whopping fifteen years since American gamers have had a new Darkstalkers game. Unfortunately, Resurrection isn’t actually a new game. Rather, it is an HD bundle of two older Darkstalkers titles, Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge, and Darkstalkers 3 (AKA Vampire Savior). It’s being developed by the same dev team that just did Marvel VS Capcom Origins which was also playable at NYCC.
A lucky selection of gamers who enjoy alcohol got to attend an afterparty by Sega to promote their 2013 shooter Aliens Colonial Marines. The game was playable at the party, but the real draw the chance to party with Aliens’ android Bishop, better known to humans as Lance Henricksen.
Tomorrow we’ll get our mitts on a few more games, and report back on the ridiculously huge crowd expected to attend this Saturday.
