Never have I been so delighted to hear FPS Doug’s maniacal howling of excitement – I’m pretty hyped myself right now as the greatest web series ever returns!
If you’ve never heard of the show, allow me to provide some back-story as to why this is such a big deal. In 2004, gamers Jarett Cale (pictured right) and Geoff Lapaire fooled around with a camera and uploaded a couple of videos to a Command & Conquer forum, with Geoff recording Jarett playing an over-exaggerated gamer version of himself, obsessed with “pwning noobs”. The feedback was positive and people begged for more, and those videos became the first two episodes of a web series sensation starring Jeremy the Pwnerer (Jarett) and his non-gaming cameraman brother Kyle (Geoff).
The show outed two seasons, each episode more hilarious than the last. Sadly, Troy Dixon who played the pimp Halo pro T-Bag in the show passed away in the car crash, which halted production of the web series altogether since 2008. Pure Pwnage finally made it big in 2010 with a Canadian TV series, that acted as a reboot of sorts. Misfortune continued however, as despite the show still being great, they weren’t picked up for a second season.
Ever since then, I occasionally checked the website just in the hopes of a new announcement. Fans will know my joy when they watch the video below.
But to return once again, Pure Pwnage needs your help. They are fundraising for Pure Pwnage: Teh Movie on IndieGoGo, and have exceeded their $75,000 goal. There’s some awesome perks to be gained for generous doners, from gaining the official DVD to film props and a role in the movie.
We’ve made web episodes with a budget of ten dollars. We’ve made TV episodes with a budget of a million. We’ve had the incredible opportunity to engage in all elements and mediums of video creation… except one.
We want to make a movie. But not just any movie, we want to make THE gamer movie, the one that finally does justice to online gaming and Internet culture on the big screen. We feel that Hollywood has continually (and often epically) failed to deliver on this front. So we want to pwn Hollywood like somebody’s mom playing Call of Duty and we need your help to do it.
The IndieGoGo page states that the movie will be “going back to the series’ roots”, based on the original web series and taking place a few years after the last episode. Its unclear whether any other characters will return, such as Jeremy’s friend Dave, mentor Teh Masterer, or girlfriend Tagi, but I’m more than happy to see main characters Jeremy, Kyle and Doug come back.
For those new to the series, you’re incredibly lucky! You have two seasons of the web series to watch free on the website and eight TV episodes plus tons of bonus content while we all eagerly await the theatrical release. Start here at the introduction video, and here’s some of my favourite clips from the show.
Looks like the Angry Video Game Nerd may have some competition!
