If there was a game I’d be heavily anticipating, it would be Notch’s upcoming 0x10c. 0x10c is going to be a sandbox science fiction game that will feature engineering, building your own ship, a real, functional in-game computer, epic space battles and the ability to land on a planet in a seamless transition. There hasn’t been a ton of information released about the game outside of Notch’s plans and a few rough screenshots from his development cycle. What we do know is that it is still relatively early in the development cycle, but this video that Notch released today shows that the game is coming along nicely.
The video released by Notch shows the screen from a first person perspective holding an unskinned weapon and running around a rather plain, but realized room. You can get a feel for how the physics will work in the game as the character scales up different types of terrain in the room. Then he goes on to test the shooting mechanics in the game and fires off a series of shots using the unskinned weapon, unleashing laser beams upon the walls. You can also see how the character “bobs” up and down while moving, giving it a more realistic range of movement.
There is a lot to take away from such a simple video, the biggest thing, in my mind, is that the basics are pretty much completed and that we can expect a lot more in short order. Within short order, we can expect to see some fully-realized ships, worlds and landscapes and get a better feel for what 0x10c will be when it is released. For now, just watch this video below and check out what looks to be a promising base for a very ambitious game from the creator of the smash addictive hit, Minecraft.
